Different Types of Keyloggers

Keyloggers are both helpful and risky. Employers may find that it is one of the best tools to monitor their employees. Others may find it absolutely dangerous since it’s easily installed and greatly invisible.

Keyloggers are defined as a tool to monitor a computer’s keyboard activity. They come in different forms, which is what we will talk about today.

Below are the two major types of keyloggers as well as the different forms of each.

1. Software-based keyloggers

Software-based keyloggers are essentially programs that aim to monitor your computer’s operating system. They vary in types and levels of system penetration. One example of which is memory injection software. These are typical Trojan viruses that alter the memory tablet of a system in order to bypass online security. Another example is a form-grabbing based software. This controls the forms submitted online and essentially tracks all the information a users puts in every form.

Software-based keyloggers are more dangerous if there are additional features for each. They can be very hard to detect that’s why it takes a lot to remove them.

2. Hardware-based keyloggers

Compared to a software-based, hardware ones don’t need any installing since they are already within the physical system of the computer.

Keyboard keyloggers are one of the most common examples of hardware-based ones. It monitors the keyboard keys a user presses and then records it secretly. Another example is the acoustics keyloggers. They record the sounds of the keys pressed by every user. Since each sound is unique, it is possible to predict which key it is.

Keyloggers can either be evil or good. Considering there are so many types of keyloggers out there, one should always be very cautious.

Android users touch their smartphones more than 2,500 times a day, research says

Study: We touch our phones around 2,617 times a day

According to a new research, Android smartphone users on an average touch their smartphones around 2,617 times a day, reports Indian Express. The research found that the smartphone screen time was 2.42 hours for the average user, and 3.75 hours for the heavy user.

Research firm Dscout in the U.S. for the study employed a demographically diverse sample of 94 Android users from a pool of more than 100,000 participants. They then built an additional smartphone tool to track every user’s interaction across 5 days, 24 hours a day. These interactions involve typing out texts, scrolling through Facebook feeds, turning pages in Kindle books, and much more, all at short and frequent intervals.

Researchers found that people tapped, swiped and clicked an enormous 2,617 times each day, on average.

The heaviest users – the top 10% – were found to touch their smartphones almost twice as much, at 5,427 touches per day. Averaging out the numbers, the aforementioned figures mean the heaviest users are touching their devices a couple of million times in one year, Dscout says

“Each tap and swipe feels small and harmless. Just a tiny fraction of our brain power and physical effort,” but to what extent are the interactions not good, it wonders.

Here are the key notes from the study:

Users prefer to keep smartphone sessions on the shorter side with rare cases of long usage times

The average users engaged in 76 separate phone sessions a day, totaling 2.42 hours. Heavy users (the top 10 per cent) averaged 132 sessions a day, totaling 3.75 hours. The longer usage times were far less preferred such as either watching a video on Netflix or reading a book in the Kindle app, to shorter browsing sessions with numerous breaks.

A major portion of interactions are spent within messaging and social apps

Users on an average spent 26% of their time on messaging apps and 22% of their time on social media app interactions. Further, 10% of their time was spent on internet search browsing. In addition, Facebook had the most number of touches at 15%, followed by native messaging at 11%, home screen at 9% and Chrome at 5%.

During the day, usage time explodes at key points

Researchers found that activity drops (but far from disappears) in the predawn hours. In fact 87 percent “of participants checked their phones, and brought them out of a sleep state, at least once between midnight and 5 a.m.” over the five-day sample period.

However, the average number of touches began as soon as participants woke up around 7 a.m. and increased through the evening.

Finally, the popularity of micro-interactions, especially within messaging and social apps, offers important visions into user behavior for businesses.

The wider the circle, the greater the odds of making a catch.

2. Yellow and red circles mean better Pokemon

When facing a Pokemon, you may notice that it has the initials “CP” next to its name. “CP” stands for Combat Power. The higher the CP, the stronger the Pokemon. If there is a green circle around a Pokemon, it implies it is easier to catch. However, a yellow or red circle surrounding them means that they escape from the Pokeball or even swipe it away.

Incense attracts Pokémon to your space for 30 minutes. You start out with two in your bag, so don’t forget to accumulate them. 4. Transfer duplicate Pokemon to the Professor

Whenever you snag a new Pokémon, you may notice you will also earn candy and stardust. Both items will help level up your characters to make them stronger. When you have more than one of the same Pokemon, you can transfer your duplicates to the Professor, who will give you Candies in exchange. These Candies can help you change and raise the CP of your Pokemon.

5. Eggs can give you new Pokemon and items

When you visit a Poké Stop, you can earn Balls to seize more creatures or Eggs. You are given an Incubator at the start of the game, which can help you hatch Eggs that you may find at PokeSpots. Once the Egg is inside the incubator, you must walk to complete the process. Note, that each Egg has a different distance required to hatch, and the higher the distance, the rarer the Pokemon or items.

6. Find more Pokemon in their “natural” habitats

Looking for water-type Pokemon? Look for them near rivers, lakes, and oceans. If you are looking for rock-type Pokemon, you are most likely to find them near mountains. You can still find all kinds of Pokemon anywhere. It is just that you are more likely to locate them in places that would seem more natural.

7. For better chances of catching, go to well-populated PokeStops

Turn on this experimental feature on Microsoft Edge to make the browser run even faster

Speed up Microsoft Edge by enabling TCP Fast Open

Edge, which was introduced with Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 10 last July has not only managed to surpass many of its rivals but it also works 40% faster in some scenarios. Thanks to an experimental feature in Microsoft Edge known as TCP Fast Open.

TCP Fast Open is a new feature of Microsoft Edge that speeds up the web browser’s page loading time by over 10% on average, and in some cases up to 40%. TCP Fast Open is an extension of the TCP protocol that enables data exchange during TCP’s initial handshake. Currently, the feature is only available in preview versions of Microsoft Edge available on Fast and Slow Ring Insider Builds. However, it seems likely that Microsoft will make available the feature in next month’s Anniversary Update for Windows 10.

The users when surfing the web may notice significant speed improvements, only if the client and the web server at the other end support TCP Fast Open. It is likely that web server compatibility will improve in the near future as both Microsoft and Apple support the feature now (Google on Linux and Android).

While mobile versions of Chrome support the feature on Android, TCP Fast Open for the desktop was introduced by Microsoft only last month. The feature showed up in one of the Insider Preview builds that rolled out, but it has been disabled by default so far.

TCP Fast Open allows the client to start sending data to the server much faster than before, because the client no longer waits for a full handshake to occur. In other words, the client browser, in this case Edge, can cut off hundreds of milliseconds of loading times. In short, the less latency you can have between two far away systems that are trying to connect, the faster the load times.

TCP Fast Open, as mentioned above, is only available in Insider Preview builds of Microsoft Edge, and it’s turned off by default. So, here’s how to turn it on:

• Open the Edge browser
• Go to the three dot pane and click on Settings
• Check if you have EdgeHTML 14.14361 or higher at the bottom of the page
• Click on the address bar and type about:flags and hit Enter
• Under Networking, click on Enable TCP Fast Open
• Restart Edge

It’s important to note that you may not notice any speed improvements on some pages. Of course, like all experimental features, there could be some issues. If you run into any problems, you can just turn it back off again by following the same above directions. In the worst case scenario, just select Reset all flags to default in case you start tinkering with other options.

For the ones, who are not on Insider builds, do not worry. Once the TLS 1.3 protocol gets finalized this summer, Microsoft is determined to bring TCP Fast Open to everyone and enhance loading speeds.

What is Li-Fi?

5 Facts Every Computer Programmer Should Know

What are the things that a programmer must know (obviously besides programming languages)?

The word “computer” was first recorded as being used in 1613 in a book called The Yong Mans Gleanings by English writer Richard Braithwaite to describe a human who performed calculations or computations. In the book he said, “I haue read the truest computer of Times, and the best Arithmetician that euer breathed, and he reduceth thy dayes into a short number.” (The spelling mistakes were all deliberate BTW, it was a simpler time back then).

1. The first “pre-computers” were powered by steam
In 1801, a French weaver and merchant, Joseph Marie Jacquard, invented a power loom that could base the design of a fabric upon punched wooden cards.

Fast forward to the 1830s, and the world marvelled at a device large as a house and powered by six steam engines. It was invented by Charles Babbage, the father of computing – and he called it the Analytic Engine.

Babbage used punch cards to allow the monstrous machine to be programmable. The machine consisted of four parts: The mill (analogous to CPU), the store (analogous to memory and storage), the reader (input) and the printer (output).

It is the reader that makes the Analytic Engine innovative. Using the card-reading technology of the Jacquard loom, three different punched cards were used: Operation cards, number cards and variable cards.

Babbage sadly never managed to build a working version, because of ongoing conflicts with his chief engineer. It seems even back then, CEOs and devs didn’t get a long.

2. The first computer programmer was a woman
In 1843, Ada Lovelace, a British mathematician, published an English translation of an Analytical Engine article written by Luigi Menabrea, an Italian engineer. To her translation, she added her own extensive notes.

In one of her notes, she described an algorithm for the Analytical Engine to compute Bernoulli numbers. Since the algorithm was considered to be the first specifically written for implementation on a computer, she has been cited as the first computer programmer.

Did Lovelace go onto a life of Ted Talks (or whatever the Victorian equivalent was)? Sadly not, she died at the age of 36, but her legacy thankfully lives on.

3. The first computer “bug” was named after a real bug
While the term ‘bug’ in the meaning of technical error was first coined by Thomas Edison in 1878, it took another 6o years for someone else to popularize the term.

In 1947, Grace Hopper, an admiral in the US Navy, recorded the first computer ‘bug’ in her log book as she was working on a Mark II computer.

A moth was discovered stuck in a relay and thereby hindering the operation. Before it was recorded on her note, the moth had been ‘debugged’ from the system.

On her note, she wrote, “First actual case of bug being found.”

4. The first digital computer game never made any money
What is considered as the forefather of today’s action video games and the first digital computer game wasn’t particularly successful.

In 1962, a computer programmer from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Steve Russell, and his team took 200 man-hours to create the first version of Spacewar.

Using the front-panel test switches, the game allowed two players to take control of two tiny spaceships. It became your mission to destroy your opponent’s spaceship before it destroyed you.

In addition to avoiding your opponent’s shot, you also had to avoid the small white dot at the centre of the screen, which represents a star. If you bumped into it, boom! You lost the battle.

Russell wrote Spacewar on a PDP-1, an early Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) interactive mini computer which used a cathode-ray tube display and keyboard. Significant improvements were made later in the spring of 1962 by Peter Samson, Dan Edwards and Martin Graetz.

Although the game was a big hit around the MIT campus, Russell and his team never profited from the game. They never copyrighted it. Besides, they were hackers who wanted to do it to show their friends. So they shared the code with anyone who asked for it.

5. The computer virus was initially designed without any harmful intentions
In 1983, Fred Cohen, best known as the inventor of computer virus defense techniques, designed a parasitic application that could ‘infect’ computers. He defined it as computer virus.

This virus could seize a computer, make copies of itself and spread from one machine to another via a floppy disk. The virus itself was benign and only created to prove that it was possible.

Later he created a positive virus called compression virus. This virus could be written to find uninfected executables, compress them upon the user’s permission and attach itself to them.
